Did you know…Gary was born and raised in Colorado, loving the Rockies, skiing, climbing the state’s 14,000 foot peaks. He committed his life to Christ, asking Him to take the wheel, at the University of Denver while studying to be an accountant (thank you Don Orvis!). He met Laurie Waite on their way to the Denver Seminary, to share their stories of coming to know and love Jesus with the students. Gary and Laurie got married at Galilee Baptist Church in Denver after graduation – and Gary had to work at the dorm the next day! After the University of Denver, Gary went to Denver Seminary simply because he wanted to know the Bible better than anything else. They were originally appointed by their mission to go to Pakistan, not Rwanda! They’ve lived in Rwanda since 1979 training leaders for the Rwandan churches. Gary enjoys running, bird watching, climbing mountains, biking, reading, AND being a grandfather! Click HERE to read Gary's story about how he became a Christian. Did you know… Laurie was a California girl — can you tell?. She moved to Denver after high school and studied psychology at the University of Denver. Laurie was just about to be baptized into the Mormon church when she committed her life to Christ. Later, after she met Gary, he told her that in those days he had been praying for “some girl named Laurie.” After DU Laurie taught in a private school for kids with special needs. She put hubby through seminary making $500/month! Laurie never wanted to go to Africa! It was a struggle to accept the idea of living overseas as a missionary. It was seeing anew what Jesus did for us on the Cross that made her want to live completely for Him. She gave birth to Matthew in Rwanda — costing all of $2.00! She has now lived and worked in Rwanda since 1979. Laurie enjoys cooking (a good thing, since most cooking in Rwanda is done from scratch), reading, walking and praying with her best friend, AND being a grandmother! Fast Facts...
