Ninety percent of pastors in Rwanda have never completed secondary school. As a result, there is a huge need for biblical pastoral education. The Pastoral Training School at NCM was developed to meet this need and to do so in Kinyarwanda, the language that speaks to these pastors’ hearts.
PTS is a four-year semi-residential program which serves pastors from all over Rwanda, Southern Uganda and Burundi. Pastors come to NCM’s facility four times per year for three weeks at a time. During those three-week sessions, they are challenged with courses on Scripture, ministry and theology. Their studies continue while they are at home as they implement assignments in their churches – including developing children’s programs, starting small group ministries and cultivating strong leadership teams. Throughout the year, members from the NCM staff team visit pastors in their homes and churches to assist in the implementation of learning. Additionally, every year the wives of these pastors come to NCM’s campus for a week of training and discipleship.
Here is what a few of our students have said about their experiences in the PTS program:
Gatera – I was a pastor, but it wasn’t until learning about the true Gospel at PTS that I became a Christian. Now my life has been changed. Before, I didn’t communicate well with my wife, but now our children are asking what happened because they see a new love between us.
Umwizerwa – My father was a pastor and I grew up in the church as a worship leader. But it wasn’t until I came to PTS that I realized I was a sinner and needed to become a child of God through faith in Jesus. When the teacher asked if there was anyone who understood the true Gospel for the first time and wanted to receive Jesus, I didn’t respond. But as I was in my office preparing to preach about the Gospel at my church, the Holy Spirit said, “You are going to teach others how to become a Christian, but you haven’t become a Christian yourself.” After hearing that, I knelt down and asked Jesus to come and be the Lord of my life. I thank God for directing me to come to PTS.
Munyabarenzi – PTS is very different from other Bible schools. When my teachers came to visit my home and my church, it was amazing to see them be willing to sleep at my home. Their humility and fellowship was an encouragement to me, my family and my church. This kind of example is very needed within the Church.
